Glorious moment for FEU & ORADEC

Last March 31, FEU won as national champion in the English Speaking Union Extempo Contest held in UP Diliman. It was a competition that made me proud as one of the advisers of the ORADEC. Our contestants were in full shape and you would feel really proud that they are from FEU. It is just saddening that we did not bring a video camera to capture the moment. Our speakers were like the real Tamaraws establishing harem.

Congratulations to Weber Amores, Stephanie Santos and Ira Montecastro. Weber will go to London for the international competition.

I think preparation and focus or determination are keys that no brilliant man/woman can surpass. There were many witty and intelligent speakers but the nuances and stances of our speakers made them look more authoritative and with full conviction. They did not glance at their notes but had consistent audience control. They were smartly well-dressed. They looked in full control of the situation.

I guess some perennial speakers have underestimated FEU (usually the case which I abhor). We are silent but when we rule, we rock! The underestimation gave others the license to be complacent. But FEU is very FEU. It succeeds during the least expected time. The last time we joined ESU was when the Philippines first sent its representative with our very own KC Buenafe as the contestant. At that time, two of the three slots went to FEU with Rose Lyn as 2nd runner-up.

Lesson learned:

1. No pain, no gain. The trainees had experienced all the pain from the constructive and sharp criticisms with even bitchy remarks like may amnesia ka ba at mukha ka ng tinapa! Our contestants already felt the pressure of Q and A portion even before the contest.

2. Victory is a strategy. We chose the angle that will fleet and be recognized. We did it successfully.

2. FEU will regain its glory in other fields (not just in public speaking because we have a very impressive track record in this area) if only there is focus and support on what needs to be supported. In FEU, it is just a question of priority. Hit the right priority and the golden years of Nicanor Reyes, Sr.'s leadership will come back to life.
